Mobile Automaton
We have a complete 3D CAD model of the mobile automaton (with some exceptions noted below), using SolidWorks.
Download the model a SolidWorks (EASM) file.
To view the model use the free downloadable E-drawings viewer.
There are some elements that are missing from our CAD model:
- the ropes, which are not well modelled in SolidWorks
- the figures of Dionysos and dancing maenads; and the rooftop Nike. For these we used meshes from 3D scans of the following:
- Dionysos with thyrsus, accompanied by a panther and Pan (Copenhagen inv. 1644), with modifications (removal of Pan; channels for liquids)
- nymph (Copenhagen inv. 1787)
- the Nike of Samothrace
- some architectural moulding details
We are grateful to the Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen, for allowing us to take scans of the statues of Dionysos and of the nymph, and to Geoffrey Marchal (currently post-doctoral research associate at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of West Florida) for taking the scans on our behalf.
A number of appropriately licensed scans of the Nike of Samothrace are avialable online.
Stationary automaton
We have planned the stationary automaton. The model will appear here in due course.
